BIPOC TEACHERS

Although yoga is an indigenous practice from South Asia which shares roots with numerous religions and spiritual practices, yoga spaces in the west disproportionately center whiteness in terms of both teachers and practioners. 


Below are some suggestions for BIPOC yoga teachers who bring a wealth of cultural knowledge and wisdom to the practice and study of yoga through their lived experiences.

KALLIE SCHUT

A British-born yoga teacher of Indian heritage, Kallie brings cultural awareness to the practice and develops our understanding of the colonial legacy in modern yoga through her 10 hr course on the dynamics of race, cultural appropriation and integrity

TEJAL PATEL

Co-host of the Yoga is Dead Podcast, Tejal is a passionate advocate for the Indian American teacher in the Western offerings of yoga, and creates offerings that are inclusive, accessible for all body types, income and experience levels, including specific yoga and meditation classes for BIPOC.

MICHELLE JOHNSON

Author of the book Skill in Action; social justice warrior, dismantling racism trainer,  yoga teacher and practitioner, Michelle has over 20 years of experience leading dismantling racism work and working with clients as a licensed clinical social worker.

DIANNE BONDY

Dianne Bondy is a social justice activist, author, accessible yoga teacher, and the leader of the Yoga For All movement. Her inclusive approach to yoga empowers anyone to practice—regardless of their shape, size, ethnicity, or level of ability.

SUSANNA BARKATAKI

A teacher, inclusivity promoter, and yoga culture advocate, rooted in her Indian and British background, Susanna works to showcase yoga in action, spread the message of diversity and inclusion, and help people connect with roots and authenticity in yoga.

NATALIA TABILO

Chilean-born but now based in San Francisco, Natalia offers joyful, body positive classes, no matter your size, shape, abilities or experience with yoga to allow you to truly find, listen, love, and reconnect with your self, in both English and Spanish.
