DIVERSITY IN YOGA
Yoga is often portrayed as though available only a small minority of people, largely white, economically privileged, able-bodied, young, cis-gender women. In fact, yoga is for ALL BODIES: every gender, every body size and ability, every age and every color. As pracitioners of yoga, we have a duty to inform ourselves about the history and power dynamics associated with the practice and work to effect a culture change within it and not perpetuating harm through our practice.
One of the key ways we can do this is by acknowledging the cultural and historical roots of yoga, ensuring that any use of language, objects and practices are respectful of those cultures, and doing the work to ensure our practice true to the spirit of yoga, which is the union of mind and body and the liberation of the self and the collective.
There is a plethora of amazing yogis of all shapes, sizes, identities, ages and ability who have conducted meaningful explorations on these issues and from whom we can educate ourselves, grow and deepen our practice. The links below are just a sampling of discussions, perspectives and educational resources. We encourage you conduct your own investigation of these complex issues further!
